Root Canal Treatment

A root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is a routine dental procedure used to remove infection or inflammation from inside a tooth's pulp. This essential treatment eliminates harmful bacteria, relieves severe tooth pain, and saves your natural tooth from requiring complete extraction.🔗

Why the Procedure is Needed?🔗

The hard, outer layers of your teeth shield a soft inner core called the pulp. This pulp contains the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues that help teeth grow. According to clinical insights from the American Association of Endodontists, deep decay, cracked teeth, or sudden physical trauma can let bacteria break into this chamber. Left untreated, the dying pulp creates a painful abscess in the surrounding jawbone.

Step-by-Step Treatment Process🔗

A standard root canal treatment is highly precise and usually takes one to two clinic visits.

  1. Numbing and Isolation: Your dentist administers local anesthesia so you will feel no pain. They then place a protective rubber sheet, called a dental dam, around the tooth to keep it dry and clean.

  2. Accessing the Canal: A small opening is drilled through the top crown of your tooth to reach the damaged pulp chamber.

  3. Cleaning and Shaping: The dentist uses tiny, specialized instruments to clear out all the dead and infected pulp tissue. The empty root canals are thoroughly washed and disinfected with antibacterial solutions.

  4. Filling and Sealing: The sanitized canals are packed tightly with a biocompatible, rubber-like material called gutta-percha to block future bacteria. A temporary or permanent filling seals the top opening closed.

Essential Post-Treatment Care🔗

  • Avoid Hard Chewing: Do not chew or bite down hard on the treated side until the final crown is placed.

  • Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft food choices like yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, or smoothies for the first couple of days.

  • Maintain Hygiene: Keep brushing and flossing regularly, but use a gentle hand around the recovering tooth
