Treatments of Dental Injuries

Dental trauma refers to any injury to the teeth, gums, periodontal ligament, jawbone, or surrounding soft tissues like the lips and tongue. According to the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT), managing these injuries promptly and correctly is crucial to prevent long-term complications or permanent tooth loss. Treatment strategies differ significantly depending on whether the injured tooth is a primary (baby) tooth or a permanent tooth.

Immediate First Aid for a Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Permanent Tooth

If a permanent adult tooth is completely knocked out, taking immediate, correct action within the first 60 minutes can save the tooth.

  1. Handle with care: Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface). Do not touch the root.

  2. Clean gently: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it under cold running water for 10 seconds. Do not scrub or scrape it.

  3. Reimplant if possible: Gently push the tooth back into its socket and have the patient bite down on a clean handkerchief to hold it.

  4. Use storage media: If you cannot put it back in the socket, place the tooth in a cup of milk, saline solution, or a specialized tooth preservation kit. Never store the tooth in plain water, as this kills the root cells.

  5. Seek urgent care: Go straight to a dentist or endodontist immediately
